The Bonner Springs Board of Education received a good report from the district auditor Monday night at the regular school board meeting.

Auditor Vern Schallehn reported after examining the district's books that everything was in "proper order."

"We found no violations," Schallehn told board members. "We look at the internal control of the system and evaluate it. We look at grants and make sure all of the reports are filed properly."

The only complaint the auditor filed had to do with the district's tracking of its physical assets.

"The only exception we had is that you don't take a physical inventory of your assets, which you are entitled not to do under Kansas statute," he said.

Board member Cliff Brents pointed out that the lack of an inventory is not uncommon for school districts.

"Don't most school district's do that?" he asked.

Schallehn explained the majority of districts and municipalities use the exemption.

In other action, Superintendent Bob Van Maren asked board members to give the district permission to sell a modular unit located at Clark Middle School.

Van Maren said the unit was getting old and was no longer needed. It would have to be moved to make room for new construction at the school, he explained.

"It would cost almost $5,000 to move here (to the district office). We'll have to look at the moving cost when we sell it," he said. "It's not worth a whole lot."

The 17-year-old unit has no steel under it, which is why it would cost so much to move, Van Maren said. The superintendent didn't rule out the possibility of using such a unit in the future, but said he did not think the current one was worth saving.

"If, at some point in the future, we need another one, I think we just bite that bullet when the time comes," he said.

Board members voted to take bids on the unit.

Van Maren also invited board members to attend the district open house from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Dec. 20 at the district office, 2200 S. 138th St.
