‘Tis the season
With the transition from October to November we have a change in the season, from the season of ghosts and ghouls to pumpkins, turkey and Thanksgiving. Traditionally it also would be the transition to thoughts of the nativity and Santa, however, since retailers have had Christmas displays out since July, that transition is no longer appropriate.
They say that spring is the season when a young man's thoughts turn to what women have been thinking about all winter (yep, baseball). If such seasonal changes can really happen, then this is the time of year when everyone else starts thinking about what Jayhawks have dreamed of all year, basketball.
We are quickly making that transition from pigskins in the air (yes, pigs can fly) to roundballs on the hardcourts. Of course, the college gridiron season goes on and the NFL season is just past the midway mark.
The problem with measuring everything in seasons is it just seems to confuse us all. In addition to the spring, summer, autumn and winter, there's football, baseball, basketball, hockey, track, NASCAR, fishing, hunting, softball, volleyball, tennis, and sumo wrestling seasons, just to name a few. Of course many of those sports come in prep, college and pro levels so each and every one is individually divided.
Of course you can become a seasoned veteran, but there's those seasons you dread like tax season and silly season.
Some seasons are far too short, others way too long, very few are just right. The prep football season seems way too short; the NBA and NHL seasons are way too long.
The season for the casual duffer is way too short, the PGA season never ends. Most hunters complain that the season is way too short, but alas, so is fresh fruit and veggie season. I think the baseball season is just right, however, I am sure my wife thinks it is about five months too long.
Can anyone buy seasonal items while they are still in season? When some seasons never end, how exactly do you know when it's the pre or postseason? More importantly, why do the Chiefs charge as much for preseason games as they do the regular season?
Oh, how we all long for vacation season.
If you season your turkey just right what a glorious day Thanksgiving can be. However, if the cold and flu season has you feeling down, not even the promise of all-day football can pick you up.
While the tourist traps might have prices seasonably adjusted, we can all take great joy in the fact there are just five days remaining in the campaign season.
