You can count on it
For years, college football fans have clamored for a national championship game. A few years ago the concept of the BCS poll being used to match up the No. 1 and No. 2 team was devised to give us that title game.
But, I fear, that contest will do little to bring a decision this year. The national championship will be in jeopardy. And you know why -- by the luck of the draw in rotating games, this year`s champion will be determined in the Orange Bowl, which we all know is played in Miami.
Here`s how I foresee it in my crystal ball. First off, the game will match No. 1 Oklahoma, which will earn the top spot by smashing Kansas State in the Big 12 title game, against No. 2 Miami, which will earn the spot because it`s a Florida team which seems to be worth a zillion points in the BCS selection system.
Oklahoma will come out early in the game and just simply exploit every weakness of the Miami team, scoring at will and making every defensive play. But by about the 10-minute mark of the first quarter, odd and seemingly outrageous calls will foil virtually every Oklahoma offensive drive and defensive stand. But through sheer determination the Sooners will be ahead when the game is over, 35-27.
But officials will be delayed in presenting the championship trophy when it is determined that a play review will be used to re-watch the game looking for irregularities. Three NCAA-certified officials, with official residence in Florida, will make the review.
When they are completed, it will be determined that the actual final score will be Oklahoma 35-34, meaning an automatic second review will be necessary.
This time the game will be reviewed by a panel of experts with one from the Florida attorney general`s office, one member of the Miami coaching staff and a senior citizen from Palm Beach County, who will re-watch the game and change any erroneous calls. However, only plays benefiting Miami are eligible for review. Further, actual results can be set aside if it is determined that the intent of the play was different than the result.
For example, if Oklahoma had sacked the Miami quarterback, obviously the actual intent of the quarterback was to throw the ball. So, the result will be reversed to indicate the actual intent and a completed pass will be awarded.
Hopefully, this process will determine the actual winner of the national championship. However, if by some chance Oklahoma is still clinging to a victory, then the entire season will be reviewed with the same criteria as the second review employed. The good news locally is the review will determine that both KU and K-State had actually knocked off Oklahoma during the regular season. The corrected final scores will be K-State 185, Oklahoma 0; and KU 6, Oklahoma 3.
