November 30, 2000

Basehor-Linwood High School has been selected to host a 4A Sub-State tournament, while Bonner Springs High School has been placed in one of the toughest 5A brackets. On Tuesday, the Kansas State High School Activities Association released the assignments for the 2001 sub-state tournaments, which will be played Feb. 26-March 3.

Basehor-Linwood will host the boys and girls semi-finals and championship games in a 4A Sub-State, March 1-3. First round games are played at the site of the top four seeds.

Five of the schools assigned are members of the Kaw Valley League, including DeSoto, Lansing, Mill Valley and Piper. Also, Bishop Ward, Spring Hill and Sumner Academy will participate. Sumner Academy's boys are the defending 4A State champs.

"We're very excited to be hosting the sub-state tournament and are excited with the competitive field that has been assigned to us," said Joe Keeler, BLHS athletic director.

As for Bonner Springs, the Braves and Bravettes have been assigned to a 5A Sub-State hosted by Schlagle.

Actually, Schlagle will host four of the eight schools assigned, while one of the other seven schools will be selected to host the other four schools after a seeding meeting on Feb. 24.

Assigned to the Schlagle Sub-State are Highland Park, Shawnee Heights, Topeka Seaman, Topeka West, Turner and Washington.

In the boys bracket, Shawnee Heights, Schlagle and Highland Park finished 1-2-3 in last year's 5A State tournament, while Topeka West took first and Shawnee Heights was third in the 5A State girls tourney.

"No matter where you go, you're going to end up with two or three good teams in there. That's one of those things," said Bonner Springs athletic director/girls head coach Garold Baker.

As for other Kaw Valley League schools, Perry-Lecompton, Santa Fe Trail and Tonganoxie have been assigned to a 4A Sub-State at Topeka Hayden, and Immaculata will go to a 3A Sub-State at Horton.

In the Huron League, Atchison will head to the Topeka Hayden tournament and Ottawa will compete in a 4A Sub-State at Baldwin.

The sub-state winners in 4A will advance to the state tournament at the Salina Bicentennial Center, while the sub-state champs in 5A will compete in the state tournament at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, March 7-10.
