Local students in “Who’s Who Among High School Students”

A long list of students from Bonner Springs, Edwardsville, Basehor and Linwood recently entered a selective group.

Several students from the area have been included in the 34th annual edition of "Who's Who Among American High School Students, 1999-2000."

The book represents the largest recognition program and publication in the nation honoring high-achieving high school students.

Students are nominated for the publication through a variety of sources, including high school principals, guidance counselors and youth gropus. Church members and educational organization members are also eligible to nominate students.

Traditionally, 99 percent of students listed in "Who's Who Among High School Students" have a grade point average of "B" or better and 97 percent plan to continue their eduction in college.

The publication contains the names of about 750,000 students, or about 5 percent of the nation's high school students.

The students represent about 20,000 of the approximately 24,000 public, private and parochial high schools in the country.

The students also compete for $200,000 in scholarship awards and participate in the publication's annual survey of high achievers, a poll measuring the attitudes of today's teenagers.

The book is distributed free of charge to about 15,000 high schools, colleges, universities and public libraries throughout the country.

Those making the list for Basehor were: Amy Breuer, Jennifer Farr, Andrea Herbison, Heather Martley, Michelle Meyer, Emily Smith, Laurel Burchfield, Bridget Hampton, Sarah Jump, Jonathan McClure, James Pinick and Lisa Wood.

Making the list for Linwood were: Derrick Betts and Ebon Lee.

Bonner Springs students included in the publication were: Megaen Creed, Amanda Delich, Katrina Fox-O'Malley, Catherine Gilsdorf, Angelique Howard, Kelly Laffere, Josh Magaha, Whitney Mitchell, Scott Polley, Sarah Rowland, Corinne Samskey, Stephanie Schlagel, Ashley Smith, Michelle Stephen, Tanner Stransky, Jennifer Tate, Holly Thompson, Jessica Ventura, Jessica Wright, Jennifer Crosby, Joey Ford, Dave Gallagher, Amanda Goins, Travis Kerns, Michael Lemon, Alex Miller, Kevin Parks, Curt Rohner, Lara Russell, Jamie Sangster, Kyle Sherk, Kortney Steinhurst, Erin Stoner, Maggie Sullivan, Jennifer Taylor, Scott Vaughn, Rachel Waggoner and Matt Wright.

In Edwardsville, Goldie Cox made the list.

Once selected for the publication, the students are given the opportunity to nominate their favorite teachers for a similar publication entitled, "Who's Who Among American Teachers."
