Police have possible robbery suspect

November 30, 2000

Bonner Springs police have a possible suspect in the armed robbery of a local convenience store.

Investigators said they have a possible identification on one of two robbery suspects who stole money and cigarettes Nov. 19 at the Wood Oil Mart, 405 E. Front St.

Police would not elaborate on the suspect's identity, but did say it was a promising development in the case.

Two employees were working at the store when two men wearing masks came in about 5 a.m.

One man, armed with a handgun, fired several shots into the store's security surveillance equipment during the robbery. The two men ran out of the store with the money and no one was injured. Witnesses didn't see a getaway vehicle.

It was the store's security equipment that has helped police in their search of the suspects.

"I wish more businesses had this equipment, it is state of the art and has helped us," said Det. Ron Crouss, lead investigator in the case.

The store has more than a dozen surveillance cameras in the store that feed to a computer.

Software produces digital images and stores them permanently on the computer's hard drive.

The system produces clear digital pictures unlike video generated equipment. Most companies record over videocassette tapes to keep down costs. The digital equipment keeps photos filed much longer, Crouss said.

Anyone with information about the crime should call the Bonner Springs Police Department at 422-7800.
