Basehor-Linwood falls to league’s best
The Basehor-Linwood soccer team ran into some stiff competition last week as the Bobcats faced the two top teams in the Kaw Valley League.
Last Thursday night, BLHS traveled to Lansing, the second-place team in the KVL. Despite a battle, the Bobcats dropped a 5-0 decision. Basehor-Linwood is now 4-9 on the year.
The Lions scored an early goal for a 1-0 lead, but Lansing was able to get a pair of goals in a two minute span late in the first half for a 3-0 advantage.
"It was somewhat of a disappointment considering how we were playing up until then," said Lane Davis, B-L head coach. "We also had some fairly good chances that we could not convert."
Davis also praised the work of goaltender William Bardwell, who entered the contest in the second half for Charles Millison.
"Charles was injured in the first half which may have led to the two late goals," said Davis.
Two days earlier, Basehor-Linwood lost to the top team in the KVL, Mill Valley, 6-0.
"We had several scoring opportunities in the first half, but just could not get the ball in," Davis said.
Davis added that the Bobcats were missing nine players in their games against the Lions and Jaguars due to injuries.
"The other teams played well, but we did not give them the match we could have if everybody had been healthy."
Despite the losses, Davis said that the high point of the season is the play of the junior varsity squad, now 7-3-3 on the year.
"Although high school sports success is measured by the play of the varsity, being a first-year team, I think there needs to be a focus on the entire program.
"This team is made up of players that will be returning in the next couple of years. When measured up against established programs, our future looks bright."
The Bobcat teams will end the regular season on Thursday afternoon, hosting DeSoto at Field of Dreams. Kickoff for the varsity match is set for 4 p.m.
Regional action for the 4-3-2-1A tournament begins Monday. On Saturday, the Bobcats will be assigned to one of four regionals in the east.
Among the schools Basehor-Linwood could play are: Atchison, Bishop Ward, Immaculata, Kansas City Christian, Lansing, Maranatha Academy, Maur Hill Prep, Mill Valley, Piper, Sumner Academy and Tonganoxie.
The four regional winners advance to the state quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Tonganoxie is hosting the semifinals and finals, Nov. 3-4.
