Sub-state awaits Lady ‘Cats
It's do-or-die time for the Basehor-Linwood High School volleyball team. On Saturday, the Lady Bobcats will travel to Holton for a Class 4A sub-state volleyball tournament with the hopes of advancing to the 4A State tournament, Oct. 27-28 at the Salina Bicentennial Center.
"Lately, we've had a pattern of starting a tournament strongly and that is what we are going to need at sub-state," B-L head coach Kevin Suther said, "because if you lose, it's one and out."
It could be tough for the Lady 'Cats to advance. Joining BLHS will be Atchison, Bishop Ward, Hiawatha, Holton, Lansing, Piper and Sumner Academy.
Lansing is currently ranked third in Class 4A and will probably be the team to beat. Hiawatha traditionally has a strong team and Atchison and Sumner have both defeated Basehor-Linwood this year.
The Lady Bobcats ended their Kaw Valley League schedule on Oct. 10, traveling to Lansing for matches against the Lady Lions and Perry-Lecompton. Basehor-Linwood opened the evening with a victory over the Lady Kaws, but the night ended with a loss to Lansing.
Basehor-Linwood ended the KVL slate with a 5-3 record, placing fourth behind tri-champs Immaculata, Lansing and Santa Fe Trail.
BLHS, now 13-17 on the year, had little problem in defeating Perry-Lecompton, taking a 15-4, 15-11 victory.
"It was good to see us start each game strong, especially the first one," Suther said.
Against Lansing, though, the Lady Bobcats competed with the Lady Lions, but Lansing's height superiority helped them to a 15-5, 15-4 win over BLHS.
"Every single person that comes up and hits for them hits hard and directs their hits very well," Suther said of Lansing. "The biggest thing for them is their blocking ability. They have hands all over the place and its difficult to get kills around them, especially when you're not a big team."
Lansing dominated the match, recording 30 kills, including 19 in game one, compared to just 11 for Basehor-Linwood.
