Across the river
Johnnie Lee Kueker, Grace Reynolds, Camille Lynn, Ruth Lynn, Betty Hunter, Flossa Barney, Maxine Renner and Isabel Golden attended a volunteer appreciation luncheon for Friends of the Salvation Army Family Center in Olathe on May 5. Mrs. Doris Springer (formerly of this area) was presented with a plaque for "Olathe Volunteer of the Year" for the center.
The Monticello United Methodist Women held their annual Mother/Daughter Banquet at "The Hall" on May 5. Nearly 100 people attended and enjoyed a barbecue dinner. One family had five generations attending. They were Helen McNatt, Jeannene Johnson, Janet Williams, her daughter, Kelly, and son. The meal was served by the United Methodist Men and youth. Door prizes were the birdhouse centerpieces made from seed packets. We were entertained with two songs by a young men's quartet led by Erik Abels. Then, into the sanctuary for a program , "Wings of Love", with Yvonne Patterson of Kansas City, Mo., and her exotic birds. Quite an interesting and a very worthwhile evening. A pin was presented to Mrs. Ruth Lynn for the many quilt tops she made for our unit.
Mr. Mike Cates and daughter, Jennifer, and her friend, Amanda, were dinner guests at the home of Mrs. Shirley Lucas on May 6.
Mr. and Mrs. John Hetlinger spent the week of May 6 in Washington, D.C. Dee got to go sightseeing, while John took care of business. From there, they went to Austin, Texas, to attend their son's graduation.
Miss Jeannette Sheldon, granddaughter of Lula James, and Kevin Howe, of Merriam, were married on April 28 at the Christian Church in Merriam. The reception followed at the Merriam Community Center. Jeannette is the daughter of Chester and Dorothy Sheldon of Stilwell. The couple will make their home in Overland Park. Congratulations, kids.
Disciples I and II classes of Monticello United Methodist Church held a retreat at Tall Oaks Christian Camp near Linwood on May 4 6. Disciple II class folks attending were Pastor Randy and Rene Robinson, Jeam Hodson, Barbara Borgelt, Art Howell, Frank Neal, Kim and Neil Romary, Kim and Lloyd Norris, Jeannie Bowers and Pat Hanson. Mr. Bob Lowry substituted for Pastor Randy in the pulpit on Sunday and did a fine job.
Mrs. Dorothy Sheldon, of Stilwell, was a visitor at the home of her mother, Mrs. Lula James, on May 5. Then Jerry and Betty James visited on May 6.
Marjorie and Eldan Lynn, Maxine Renner, and Linn Hamblin ate lunch at Ponderosa in Olathe on May 8 before Linn bowled.
Mr. and Mrs. John Theole of Kansas City North, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Theole and son, and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Rabenau held a paint and lawn clean up party at the home of Dorothy Kincaid on May 6. They even brought their own dinner. Bob and Marie stayed later and we played a game of Scrabble. A good day, and my family room is beautiful.
Mr. Linn Hamblin and Mrs. Maxine Renner joined some of Linn's family at the Dinner Playhouse in Overland Park on May 6 to see "Over the Hill and Through the Woods."
Nancy and Phillip Fulks of Bonner Springs were May 7 dinner guests at the home of Betty Hunter in honor of Nancy's 50th birthday. Many happy returns, Nancy.
Mr. Darrell Lynn of Minneapolis, Minn., was a May 6 overnight guest at the home of Mrs. Camille Lynn.
Condolences to the family of Mr. Bud Lynn, who died the week of May 1. Bud had friends and relatives on both sides of the river and will be missed by many.
The Monticello U.M.W. needlecraft group met at "The Hall" of May 9. Joining for the day were Ruth Lynn, Jean Hodson, Dorothy Kincaid, Waverly Williams, Betty Hunter, Lula James, Grace Reynolds, Maxine Renner, Isabel Golden, Doris Katherman, Myrtle Thomas and Johnnie Lee Kueker. Joining us for lunch were Debbie Porter, Jim Reynolds and granddaughter, Ashley, Maureen Woolever, Tammy Vognsen and Art Howell. We quilted and visited. It was a good day.
Mrs. Jean Hodson's Mother's Day treat was a long weekend as a guest at the home of Warren and Karen Moffatt at the Lake of the Ozarks.
A group from the Monticello Community Historical Society took a bus tour to Atchison on May 5. They toured Amelia Earheart's home and other points of interest and lunched at the River House Restaurant. Twenty-three persons took the tour. Some of the locals attending were Jeanann Maurer, Doris Katherman, Vivian Triebel, her daughter and granddaughter, Richard and Michelene Mettee and Larry and Lon Davis. It was an enjoyable day.
