Backlash over Sebelius’ plans for education board

After three recent school shootings in Colorado, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania an incident just 150 miles away brings the issue much closer to home. In Joplin, Mo., on Monday a 13-year-old student brought an assault rifle to school and fired it at the ceiling before it jammed and police apprehended him. No one was injured, and the boy was charged as a juvenile with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and making terrorist threats.

The Hollis Renewal Center, 11414 Kansas Ave, will hold its annual fundraiser 5-8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 22. The event will feature a chili contest, live jazz music, homemade pies and a live auction. The Shawnee Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will match the money raised at the event.

Next week is National Business Women’s Week, so it was fitting to kick it off by recognizing the achievements of businesswomen in Bonner Springs and Edwardsville. On Tuesday night at the South Park Community Center, the Bonner Springs Business and Professional Women recognized one business and two businesswomen for their contributions to the community and to the advancement of women in business.

Last weekend, friends and family members of Spencer Buck gathered for the first annual Spencer C. Buck Memorial Poker Run, a Saturday afternoon bike ride that celebrated the life and memory of Buck, a 2003 Bonner Springs High School graduate, who lost his life in a motorcycle accident in July.

The Bonner Springs City Council approved agreements to share in road and sewer improvements for two developments Monday night. The first agreement, for Wolf Creek Estates and Wolf Creek Valley, east of 142nd Street and south of Kansas Highway K-32, binds the city to participate in half of the cost for an interim sewer system, so that the city’s share will not exceed $205,132.
