Pizza joint opens, provides variety for residents

April 3, 2008

There's now one more option for pizza lovers who don't want to leave Edwardsville or Bonner Springs.

Godfather's Pizza Express opened March 20 at 9711 Kaw Dr., in the spot vacated by Walter's Deli in December.

The store is owned by the Kenny Suter, of Piper, and supervised, along with several convenience stores he owns, by grandson and part owner Keith Suter of Shawnee.

The Suters also own and run the Snappy's convenience store next door.

With the presence of Pizzaville and Pizza Hut just down the road, Keith Suter said that since opening, the store's business has "been better than expected."

The "Express" designation in the store's name means that there are two choices of pizza to choose from, Suter said: "grab and go" personal pizzas and large pizzas. It also means there's no delivery or buffet.

The personal pizzas are kept for a maximum of 30 minutes, Suter said.

The conversion to a Godfather's brought a lot of changes to the restaurant's interior, which included getting new countertops, tables, chairs and booths.

Also, Suter said, "We cleaned it up a lot," and repainted the walls.

The retro, black-and-white checkered floor has stayed.

The store will employ eight people when fully staffed, Suter said, which means two more need to be hired. The six current employees are also family members.

Other convenience stores owned by Kenny Suter and supervised by his grandson include locations in Merriam, Leavenworth, Grain Valley, Mo., and Garden City, Mo.

How has the recent heat advisory altered your daily activities?

“Actually, we’ve spent more time outside lately working hardcore on our backyard doing some major landscaping. Lots of water breaks helped us through it. Since being outside so much, the warm weather doesn’t phase me anymore.”
