911 call prompts river search

Bonner police spend more than two hours searching for upturned canoe

April 9, 2008

A 911 call this afternoon prompted a search of the Kansas River near Turkey Island, a small patch of land on the river west of the area near Tiger Tow, 2914 Loring Dr.

The search was called off at about 5:35 p.m.

Bonner Springs Police Lt. Rick Schubert said the 911 call was from a cell phone and was made from the area near Southwest and Ashwood streets. The cell phone's service was terminated, but was still able to make 911 calls, which seems to increase the likelihood that the call was a prank.

Schubert said he figured an "enormous amount" of man-hours had been put into the search, including a search by boat, and the use of a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter. A few local television news helicopters could also be seen flying over the area.
