Kelly lifts Bravettes with goal in OT

April 30, 2008

The Bonner Springs girls soccer team has doubled its win total from last year, but the Bravettes needed overtime to do it.

They knocked off Immaculata, 3-2, on Monday night at the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, and senior Alyssa Kelly buried the game-winner.

The win is the Bravettes' second of the year, topping 2007's total of one, but BSHS coach Mike Moulin said he has been impressed with his team's effort and desire to improve this year - and Monday was a perfect example.

"It was a good win," he said. "Immaculata obviously is a good team and played well, but we kind of came together as a team and jelled last night. We came out flat in the first half, but we emphasized passing at halftime and played well in the second half."

In the first half Bonner Springs jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chelsea Crawford. The lead was short lived as Immaculata slammed two goals past goalie Tiffany Burgoon to take the lead of 2-1 into intermission.

Kelly already had one assist on the Crawford goal and gained her second of the contest when she crossed a corner kick to a streaking Tessa Seaton, who finished the goal to knot the score at two.

But Kelly was not done. In overtime she out hustled her opponents to the ball and scored the "Golden Goal" to seal the Bravettes' victory.

"In overtime we had a few good touches and I got an opening and took the shot," she said. "Golden goal : it was great."

Fellow senior Jessica Hoglund, who, according to her teammates, has improved a lot this year, said that it was "intense, it was a good win. We were all very excited, and we aren't done yet."

The Bravettes have their last home game of the year at 4:30 p.m. Thursday against Spring Hill. It is senior night, and Hoglund and Kelly are the only two seniors on the roster. They will be recognized before the game for their contributions to the soccer program .

"I love all of the girls on this team; we are really close," Hoglund said. "It will be sad to leave everybody next year."

The victory was just the beginning of the good news for Kelly this week. On Tuesday morning she accepted a scholarship offer to play soccer at Baker University in Baldwin.
