Senior Center spaghetti dinner reminds community of tradition
August 7, 2008
The 18th annual Bonner Springs Senior Center All You Can Eat Spaghetti Dinner is this Friday, and organizers promise an evening of fun and socializing.
"We try to support the community in every way we can and the community has been wonderful to support us in this effort," said Nancy Johnson, director of the senior center.
The event will run from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Christian Church, 148 N. Nettleton Ave. Five dollars buys all-you-can-eat spaghetti and meat sauce, salad, bread, dessert and beverage, with a dine-in or carry-out option.
"You can't find anything better for $5," Johnson said. "The price just can't be beat."
Proceeds from the event will go toward the Helping Seniors Scholarship Program, which funds two $500 scholarships for graduating Bonner Springs High School seniors.
Last year's event brought in about 325 hungry participants, which Johnson said was less than usual because of a rainstorm. This year, organizers hope about 400 people show up in support.
"It's just generally become a tradition and something we look forward to," she said. "We've had great support from the community over all these years."
To make the event happen, the senior center will be calling in 50 volunteers who will do everything from making the meal, selling tickets and waiting on tables. The task is not an easy one, but Johnson said the center has many dedicated supporters.
The dinner's production requires 70 pounds of raw spaghetti, 25 gallons of sauce, 50 pounds of meat, 60 pounds of salad and 50 loaves of bread. It takes two days to cook all the food, not including the desserts made and donated by members of the senior center.
"It's a big event," Johnson said. "This is huge for us and it's a real challenge for everybody."

How has the recent heat advisory altered your daily activities?
“Actually, we’ve spent more time outside lately working hardcore on our backyard doing some major landscaping. Lots of water breaks helped us through it. Since being outside so much, the warm weather doesn’t phase me anymore.”
