New district logo to give schools unified identity
August 21, 2008
The Bonner Springs-Edwardsville School District soon will have a new look to add to the feather in its cap, both courtesy of its contracted architectural firm.
At the School Board's Monday meeting, Eric Byrne, an architect and designer with architecture and planning firm ACI/Frankgiser Hutchens, presented a logo the company developed out of a synthesis of the logos of two district schools and of the district itself. The new logo features a globe, an open book, and a star design like those used in maps to show directions.
The image will be burned to a CD and distributed to staff throughout the district "for a consistent identity across the district," Byrne said.
Byrne noted the logo incorporated the school colors of all five schools in the district.
A large, stylized blow-up of the logo will be painted on glass on the rear wall of the conference room where the board meets in the district's central office, 2200 S. 138th St.
Before that, Michael Kautz, principal and architect at ACI, told the board the district's newest school, Delaware Ridge Elementary, which was designed by his firm, was featured in the 2008 edition of "Learning By Design," an annual guide whose Web site says it "showcases outstanding school and university facility design and construction projects."
Kautz presented the board with a display case of the guide's article and photos of the school.
The publication marks the second time in recent months the district has been featured in a national publication.
Brian White, choral director at Bonner Springs High School, was featured in "Choral Director" magazine's July issue for building the school's choir program from 85 to 250 students and garnering numerous state and national awards in the process.

Is it really necessary for the district to hire someone to create a logo? Did the district spend money on this? Is it really necessary to incur the cost of decorating the district board room? I'm not trying to beat a dead horse, but wouldn't the expenditure be best applied to lowering the “book rental fees” that parents are paying for books, which incidentally the children don't actually have? Where is the common sense? I suppose it's easy to spend money that isn't actually your own. Perhaps, if the district and the administrators protected the available resources and used them more efficiently, the tax mill levy could be reduced rather than increased, as has recently occurred.
