Churches take active role helping with food bills
December 3, 2008
Three churches in Bonner Springs are taking part in a program that can save families money on their food bills.
The Angel Food Ministries program offers boxes of assorted food items that are intended to provide enough for a family of four to eat for a week, for $30.
The boxes are picked up in Kansas City, Mo., and distributed by volunteers. In Bonner Springs the boxes may be purchased through Ornament of Grace Ministries, 134 N. 130th St., Grace Temple Church of God in Christ, 641 W. Morse, and Victory Assembly of God, 121 Allcutt.
Victory Assembly began offering the program in August, and Jerry Frantz, who with his wife, Paula, volunteer spreading word of the program, taking orders and distributing food, said 47 boxes were distributed on a recent Saturday at the church.
Jackie Atkins is a repeat customer of Angel Food and was happy to see it offered at Victory Assembly.
“I have used it off and on about three years,” she said. “I was excited when our church decided to do it because I can buy from our church.”
Angel Food is a nonprofit, nondenominational national organization whose Web site says it has provided grocery relief to more than 500,000 families in 30 states.
The food boxes are available to purchase by anyone, regardless of income, Frantz said.
Each month the menu changes and there is a senior citizen box featuring 10 prepared meals for $28. There are also special fruit and holiday boxes at similar prices.
Although she’s not a senior and not retired, Atkins said she buys those boxes for her lunches.
“The food is good quality” Atkins said. “It’s a good bargain. I’ve bought for myself and others.”
The next distribution of Angel Food boxes will be Dec. 20, and orders must be placed by Sunday, Dec. 7. Orders may be placed 12:15-1:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at the church. Distribution will be 9:30-11 a.m., Dec. 20.
Cash must be paid when ordering and a box or laundry basket is necessary for pickup.
