Unified Government adopts legislative agenda

December 3, 2008

The 2009 Unified Government State Legislative Program and Federal Legislative Agenda have been formally adopted by the Unified Government Board of Commissioners.

A priority issue for the Unified Government in 2009 will be protecting local government revenues. The Unified Government warns the Kansas Legislature not to solve its budget shortfalls by reneging on revenue promises made to city and county governments.

Other priority issues include: passage of a new Comprehensive Transportation Program with increased funding for public transit systems based on ridership levels instead of population; legislation to streamline and expedite the process for local governments and neighborhood organizations to deal with abandoned, nuisance and foreclosed housing, including the collection of delinquent taxes; opposition to reopening debate on the casino gaming law because attempts to change the law before approved casinos are built and operating presents a risk to the future of casino gaming.

The Unified Government is also asking the Kansas Legislature to not meddle in the operation or oversight of the Board of Public Utilities.

On the federal front, the Unified Government is urging Congress to continue support for important local programs and services such as public transit, public safety, workforce development and infrastructure improvements.
