Members of the Bonner Springs High School girls' basketball team split with highly-rated Tonganoxie last year and the Braves game Friday on the road against the Chieftains should be another key test.
"Tonganoxie is the second-best girls team in the league besides Basehor," Bonner Springs coach Clay Oakes said. "They have already won their own preseason tournament."
The Braves, 2-3, placed fourth in the Bonner Springs Metro Prep Classic Tournament in December.
Seniors Kelsey Stanbrough and Felisha Leipard were the Braves top scoring threats in the tournament. Stanbrough, who was selected for the all-tournament team for her third straight year, is averaging 12 points a game so far to pace the Braves offensive attack.
"They will lead the way and hopefully we will get one or two more players to step up," Oakes said.
Other major starters for the Braves against Tonganoxie will be seniors Chelsea Crouch and Holly Luke along with sophomore Lynsey Ostman.
"We are going basically with the same lineup," Oakes said.
After having time off for Christmas, the Braves returned to practice last Friday morning despite the two inches of snow that hit Bonner Springs that morning.
"We worked on our shooting and some on playing defense," Oakes said. "But we had a lot of girls gone because of the weather."
Oakes planned a basic week of practice for the Tonganoxie game Friday.
"We will just be going about business as usual in practice," Oakes said. "We will not be changing anything for the Tonganoxie game."
