Aches and pain: Cyclones beat ailing Braves

January 30, 2008

Bonner Springs battled the flu and Bishop Ward on Tuesday night.

In the end, the Braves couldn't beat either.

The Cyclones stormed past the Braves 59-30.

"We didn't play too inspired," coach Ryan Hull said. "We didn't have too many bright points. We played pretty uninspired. We stalled out a lot on offense. We played a good first quarter and it just kind of went down hill from there."

Bishop Ward led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Bonner Springs was outscored 20-9 and trailed 31-19 at halftime.

Things just got worse in the third quarter as Bishop Ward outscored them 15-3 and built a 24-point lead entering the final quarter of play.

Ariel Adger was the Braves' most consistent player in the loss. He scored 12 points and had success pulling up and hitting jump shots.

"Ariel was the bright spot yesterday," Hull said. "He was playing hard the entire game. He wanted to play hard and pick up the pace, I think that no one else could based on the situations."

The situation being a flu-like illness that is ravaging the team this week.

Senior guard Tyler Jock didn't play in the game had has been sick for the last two days. Aaron Hill was sick the two days leading up to the game and was only available for about a half of the game. He went home sick on Wednesday morning.

"We have three or four guys who have the flu," Hull said. "It is just one of those things. From a basketball perspective people are looking at we played un inspired, but realistically they were pretty fatigued."

Bishop Ward had three players score in double figures who combined to outscore Bonner Springs during the game.

In addition to Adger's performance, the Braves other leading scorers were L.T. Lee 8; Chase McGhee, 5; Martin Birch, 3; Johnathan Walker, 2.

Bonner Springs will play Mill Valley at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The game is a rematch of a Jan. 22 meeting between the two schools. Bonner Springs won that game 39-37 in overtime.

Since that game, Mill Valley has won two consecutive games with victories of Shawnee Mission North and last night's 61-33 win over Perry-Lecompton.

The game is expected to tip around 7 p.m.

"We are going to get a good shot," Hull said. "They want a little retribution from the OT game we kind of stole over there. We expect for them to come in here and play pretty hard."
