Recycling workshops scheduled for July
July 3, 2008
A series of workshops in July will bring residents, professionals and decision-makers together to discuss how recycling programs can be redesigned to better match citizen values and lifestyles.
The events are the second phase of the "Landfilled" project, which has engaged residents in conversations about how their values and lifestyles affect their participation in solid waste programs, such as recycling. One KC Voice, a nonprofit community engagement program for Greater Kansas City housed at the Mid-America Regional Council, is conducting the series.
The workshops will ask citizens to recommend ways to address recycling. The recommendations will be given to the MARC Solid Waste Management District, which serves as a regional solid waste-planning agency for local governments in Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray counties in Missouri, and works closely with Johnson, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.
The workshops are open to the public and each will have a different theme. Each event will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and a light meal will be provided. Registration is required for dinner.
The workshops are as follows:
¢ July 14: Business recycling, Grandview Community Center, 13500 Byars Road, Grandview, Mo.
¢ July 16: Residential curbside recycling, Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Drive, Mission, Kan.
¢ July 21: Residential curbside recycling, Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., Kansas City, Mo.
¢ July 23: Communities without residential curbside recycling, Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple Ave, Independence, Mo.
¢ July 24: Rural recycling, Paradise Pointe Golf Course, 18212 Golf Dr., Smithville, Mo.

Point of View
How has the recent heat advisory altered your daily activities?
“Actually, we’ve spent more time outside lately working hardcore on our backyard doing some major landscaping. Lots of water breaks helped us through it. Since being outside so much, the warm weather doesn’t phase me anymore.”
