Small numbers, big experience highlight Braves Football Camp

July 3, 2008

The Bonner Springs Braves Football Camp for kids in grades 3-6 wrapped up Friday at David Jaynes Field.

The camp was not as well-attended as it had been in the past, with only eight participants this year — a fact BSHS coach Lew Kasselman attributed to the multitude of summer activities available for kids.

“It is always hard in the summer for kids that play football and baseball,” Kasselman said. “The kids that were able to attend got a lot of individual attention.”

The camp focuses on fundamentals and attempts to teach participants how to properly play football, with an emphasis on throwing the ball correctly, and each position was taught. Receiver stances and patterns were learned, dummies were tackled and plays were run.

Current high school football players lead much of the camp under Kasselman’s direction.

“It is neat to see one of my current players teach the young kids how to do something that we had taught them in the past,” Kasselman said. “They seem to remember everything we have taught them over the years.”

Improvement was the goal for camp attendees, and Kasselman thought their success was noticeable as the week went on.

“When a kid finally throws a tight spiral it’s like he finally understands what we have been teaching him,” Kasselman said.

As for the varsity team coming off an impressive season, the first month of summer has been a busy one. Forty to 50 players have been working out twice a day, five days a week. Kasselman thinks that it has been a carryover factor from last season’s successes and that everyone is excited, which he said breeds accountability.

The Braves’ varsity football camp is July 28 through July 31. The first day of practice is Aug. 18.
