BSHS reunion brings back 211 alumni

June 5, 2008

On May 24, 212 alumni from Bonner Springs High school graduating classes of 1957 and earlier attended the school's reunion.

Alumni, from classes as early as 1931, came from all over the United States, along with 79 guests. The reunion began with punch and cookies provided by the classes of 1956 and 1955 in the commons area of the school. At noon a meal was catered by Kobi's Club and Deli in the cafeteria.

Everett Bowers, chairman of the reunion, welcomed guests and the honored class of 1957 and John Harrington thanked the committee on behalf of his class.

An election of officers for the next year was conducted in a short business meeting and Jeanine Gallagher led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. The class of 1936's Rev. Russell Davis gave an invocation, and Ruth Ann Kirby did a memorial placing of flowers for classmates deceased in the past year.

Betty Rehm, secretary for the reunion committee, gave a brief synopsis of the history of the all-school reunion, which was held first in 1959 at the Krispy Cafe, for the classes of 1918, 1919 and 1920, and 59 alumni attended.

Rehm told the crowd that the first reunion was organized by Irene Alden Harrington, Elsie Sowers Corwin and Helen McNeill Smithhisler, and the cost was $1.50 for admission.

At the most recent all-class reunion, door prizes and 10 cash prizes were given out, in addition to five handmade wooden airplanes donated by Bernard Everhart, plus scarves, afghans, pillows and a quilt sit-all, made and donated by Francis Holyfield.

The oldest class graduates in attendance, Edna Calvird and Harvey Stoker, class of 1931, received corsages and boutonnieres, and the cafeteria was decorated with orange and black school colors on placemats and balloons. Shawnee Copy Center donated the programs.
