Bonner Springs, Lake Forest swimmers excel at meet
June 11, 2008
The Bonner Springs Swim Club won its home triangular meet on Wednesday, June 4, as it piled up 608 points, holding off runner-up Lake Forest which had 492 points. Turner was a distant third with 217 points.
The results show just how tough the local swimming competition is becoming. Lake Forest is the two-time defending league champions, Bonner Springs has proven that it is on the rise, and Turner had numerous individual champions despite having a smaller number of competitors.
Twelve-year-old Colin Martin was the top performer for Lake Forest as he turned in five individual first-place finishes and also won gold with a relay team.
Martin was the meet champion in the 12-and-under boys division in the freestyle (29.66 seconds), butterfly (33.39), backstroke (37.52), breaststroke (40.82) and the individual medley (1:19.13). He also teamed with Tristan Lawson, Jordan Jackson and Travis Dooley to win the medley relay in 2:48.46.
Jonathan Boal was Lake Forest's other individual champion when he won the 10-and-under breaststroke in 59.58. In the freestyle relay, Andrew Christensen, Ryan Downing, David Holt and Jameson Jackson teamed to win the 8-and-under division in 1:49.00; and Jared McIntyre, Blaine Edmondsen, Drew Hern and Jared Clements won the 14-and-under division in 2:06.60. Edmondsen, McIntyre, Drew Hern and Joe D'Anieri won the 14-and-under medley relay in 2:31.17.
Robyn Lewis, Brenna Holt, Alayna Dooley and Delaney Green were the girls 10-and-under freestyle relay champions in 3:07.77; and Julianne Jackson, Cami Mitchener, Toni Stock and Lauren Callahan won the 14-and-under division in 2:13.98. Mitchener, Stock, Callahan and Jackson also won the medley relay in 2:38.51. Callahan was an individual champion in the breaststroke in 37.67.
Emily Herre led the 18-and-under girls with first-place finishes in the freestyle (28.28), breaststroke (36.63) and individual medley (1:12.51). Elissa Manford won the backstroke in 33.96, and Kayley Withers won the butterfly in 32.17.
In the co-ed relay races, Manford, Herre, Brendan Martin and Withers teamed to win the 18-and-under medley relay in 2:09.53. Withers, Herre, Martin and Angela Oberdorfer were the freestyle relay champs in 1:57.58. Meanwhile, Carly Pattison, Isaac Lawson, Kaylin Miller and Michael Sheldon won the 6-and-under freestyle relay in 3:08.

How has the recent heat advisory altered your daily activities?
“Actually, we’ve spent more time outside lately working hardcore on our backyard doing some major landscaping. Lots of water breaks helped us through it. Since being outside so much, the warm weather doesn’t phase me anymore.”
