Organizers hope for large crowd at 9th Bonner Blast
June 26, 2008
The Downtown Bonner Inc., will host its Ninth Annual Bonner Blast this Saturday, June 28 following the City Band Concert, which starts at 8 p.m. in Kelly Murphy Park.
Fireworks will be launched from Shawnee Rock bluff at Kansas Highway 32 and Kansas Highway 7. Debe Birzer, former president and current advisor of the Downtown Bonner Inc., said people could park their cars anywhere they find a spot, look up and enjoy the free display.
"It's just a way to expose what's in downtown in Bonner," she said. "People come over to see fireworks and get curious to see what's downtown."
Last year, Birzer estimated between 5,000 and 6,000 people drove to Bonner to see the fireworks. She said the group wanted the display to be the weekend before Fourth of July in hopes of getting more people out when there was less competition from other displays.
During the band concert, the Downtown Bonner Inc., will announce its winners of the small and large businesses of the year awards. This year's winners in the small business category was Frederick House, 209 W. Front St., and the winner in the large business category was Mutual Savings Association, 229 Oak St.
Fireworks will start on the last note the band plays, which Birzer estimated would be about 9:30 p.m. The rain date for the event will be Sunday, June 29.
