The Bonner Springs High School powerlifting team won the Kansas Heavy Metal Open in Hoisington, Kan., on Saturday. The victory gave the team its second win of the year. The Braves also won the Kentucky Bluegrass Open earlier this season.

Powerlifting is measured by combining the totals of three different lifts: squat, bench press, and dead lift.

During the Hoisington meet, the Braves set several new state records.

Max Barren's three-lift total of 1,102 pounds is a new Kansas state record for the Boy's 148lb class.

Clarence Forshey's three-lift total was 1,058 pounds, which was also good for a new Kansas state record for the Boy's 181lb class.

Lucas Porras broke the three-lift record for the 132 -pound class with a total of 683 pounds.

Alyson Espy placed first in the Girl's 97-pound class with a three-lift total of 297 pounds.

Max Barren, Forshey and Jake Barren will be traveling to compete in the High School Powerlifting Nationals on April 4th in Kalamazoo, Mich. All three competitors are 10th graders.
