County to provide emergency training
March 12, 2008
The Wyandotte County/ Kansas City Kansas Emergency Management Office is sponsoring Community Emergency Response Team training. The training, available to any Wyandotte County resident, will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Thursday for nine weeks beginning March 20.
The training will provide participants with skills that can help save and sustain life after a disaster until professional help arrives. CERT skills can be applied to daily emergencies and promote safe actions at home, at work, at school and other places.
Skills taught will include identifying and anticipating hazards, preparing for disasters, reducing fire hazards, extinguishing small fires, conducting light search and rescue and setting up treatment areas.
Course certification will go to those participants who attend all nine three-hour sessions. All training materials will be at no cost. Participants are asked to attend all sessions and to each bring a notebook and pen.
CERT teams are important to a community during a disaster and serve as a link between emergency services and the people they serve.
If you are interested in becoming part of the CERT team in Wyandotte County contact Larry Eker at the Emergency Management office, (913) 573-6300 or e-mail him at leker@wycokck.org.
