- The goals posted on the wall inside the humid YMCA swimming pool next door to Bonner Springs High School show times and individual’s names. The names stay the same, but the times shrink every week as the girls improve. The Bonner Springs swim team has focused on these goals since the first practice on Feb. 25 and begin competition this week. Tierney Thompson coaches the BSHS girls swim team. Thompson, who swam for New Mexico State in college, is in her first year at the school. “(The goals) are mainly endurance sets that focus on the fundamentals of swimming,” Thompson said. “I have no idea of what to expect.” Thompson’s policy in swimming is that every girl swims every event. She admits this is a different approach. “The girls will be doing things they are not used to,” she said.

The tournament has become the top sports spectacular in the country and is more popular then the World Series or Super Bowl. This year’s installment of the NCAA tournament has been no different and has featured a strong showing from local schools. The Big 12 teams that played represented the conference well.

- A large contingency of Bonner Springs youth wrestlers will vie for state championships on Saturday. The team had 11 wrestlers qualify for the 2008 Kids State Wrestling Championships by placing at districts. The state tournament will take place in Topeka at the Kansas Expo Center on Saturday.

- Last year’s Basehor-Linwood softball team took home the first Kaw Valley League championship in school history. The Bobcats finished the season 16-4. A long postseason run appeared within reach as the team hosted regionals and was the No. 2 seed. But BLHS’s stellar season ended when they were upset by No. 6 Piper. This year, coach Susan Mayberry said the team will take a game-by-game approach and fans can expect “an aggressive, experienced team that will play hard every game.

I never imagined that it would be the Royals last world title for at least another 23 years. In retrospect, perhaps I took the Al Michaels “Motley for the title” call for granted. Looking back, for a brief instant, I must have thought I was a Yankees fan.

- The Bonner Springs girls soccer team lost to Tonganoxie 4-0 Monday in the first soccer game of the season. “Inexperience and injuries were big factors tonight,” Bonner Springs coach Mike Moulin said. “Many of the girls are playing new positions because of injuries.” It was a cold evening because of the brisk wind that blew all night. The wind caused the brave soccer fans to huddle together under blankets. Bonner Springs fell behind 1-0 in the game’s sixth minute when Tonganoxie’s Jordan Gagne’s shot ricocheted off the goal and Alexa Moreno kicked the ball past Bonner Springs’ goalkeeper Tiffany Burgoon.

- A fresh start is what first-year Bonner Springs coach Roger Davidson is looking for this week when his girls softball team plays its first game. Davidson, Bonner Springs’ fourth softball coach in four years, is looking to build a program from the ground up. A program that some believe has not been taken as seriously is it should be. He said he hopes that a dedicated approach to pitching and defense will help his team succeed on the field - and translate into more wins than in previous seasons.
