Bravette swimmers set personal-best marks at Turner
May 1, 2008
Bonner Springs girls swimmers turned in seven personal-best times Thursday in a triangular meet at Turner High School.
Team scores were not kept, but the Bravettes notched numerous individual improvements.
Emily Herre (2 minutes, 17.52 seconds) and Monica Sorensen (2:37.75) in the 200-yard freestyle, Lyndie Kill in the 50 freestyle (44.55) and 100 backstroke (1:50.69), Kaley Withers (1:03.50) and Jaclyn Lira (1:09.56) in the 100 freestyle and Holly Luke (7:23.85) and Laura Rink (7:09.03) in the 500 freestyle.
BSHS coach Tierney Thompson said this year has been a building year.
"The girls have learned a lot about the strokes, specifics of race strategies and the internal motivation that is necessary for good swimming in their own races," she said. "It's natural to have enthusiasm when you are on a relay or in a team atmosphere, however with swimming being so individual they all have learned how to push themselves in each one of their races."
She is excited to see the girls apply what they have learned in practice to their races in the meets. She also enjoys seeing them show fight to stave off fatigue and muscle breakdown while pushing themselves.
The main challenge facing the Bravettes this year has been the small size in terms of participants out for swimming. When one or two girls are not able to swim, it impacts relays and individual scoring at the meets. Thompson said she hopes to have a few more girls come out for the team next year as it continues to build.
Bonner Springs' last regular-season meet is Wednesday, May 7, at the Bonner Springs YMCA. Seniors will be recognized at the meet.
