Course on boating safety to be offered at Clinton Lake

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer a one-day boating safety class this weekend near Lawrence.

The class will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday May 17, at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Information Center, which is at the entrance of Clinton Lake State Park west of Lawrence.

While the course is free of charge, purchase of the course textbook is optional.

Topics covered will include boat types and marine motors, pre-underway activities and trailering, boat handling and navigation rules, legal requirements of boating, boating emergencies, operator responsibilities and water sports.

A closed-book examination will be administered at the conclusion of the course. Successful completion of the class will satisfy the educational requirement of the state of Kansas for persons between the ages of 12 and 21 to operate a motorboat, sailboat or personal watercraft.
