Young singers to perform at USM

May 15, 2008

Two area high school singers, including one from Bonner Springs, will give their Preparatory Division Senior Voice Recital next week at University of St. Mary in Leavenworth.

Baritone Michael Cooper of Bonner Springs and soprano Regina Hanson of Leavenworth will present a program of songs, arias and duets in English, Italian, German and French by such composers as Mozart, Massenet and Vaughan-Williams.

The recital is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, in the University of St. Mary Mead Hall Walnut Room. The recital is free and open to the public.

The singers will be accompanied at the piano by their vocal instructor, William Krusemark, chairman of the department of fine arts-music, and professor of music at USM. Both young singers have had outstanding high school musical careers and plan to pursue musical studies in college.

Cooper, of Bonner Springs High School, was elected for the Kansas All-State Choir in each of the past three years. This past April he received multiple "I" ratings in brass solos, ensembles and solo voice at the Kansas 5A State Music Contest. He plans to enroll as a music scholarship student at Kansas University in the fall semester.

Hanson, of Leavenworth High School, sang the leading role of Dorothy in November in the LHS production of "Wizard of Oz" and was selected for the Kansas All-State Choir, which performed at the Kansas Music Educators' convention in February in Wichita. This past month Miss Hanson received "I" (Superior) ratings at both the Kansas 6A Regional and State Music Contests. She plans to enroll in the fall as a music scholarship student at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn.

A reception in honor of Hanson and Cooper will be in the adjacent St. Mary Hall Social Room immediately following the recital. For more information contact William Krusemark at krusemarkw@stmary.edu, or (913) 682-5151, ext. 6460.

The University of St. Mary campus is at 4100 S. Fourth St. in Leavenworth.
