BLMS girls continue strong season

On Nov. 11, the BLMS eighth-grade A team defeated Gardner-based Pioneer Ridge, 33-25, behind an 11-point effort from Jamie Johnson. The balanced attack also featured a 10-point performance by Samantha Rutherford and an 8-point effort from Kara Stephens. Desiree Ridder added 3 points and Mallorie Belk chipped in 1.
The victory was a big deal for the Bobcats, considering Pioneer Ridge defeated them by 16 points earlier in the season.
The BLMS B team also picked up a victory as it squeaked past Pioneer Ridge, 25-23. Mallorie Belk and Alyssa Stubbs scored 6 points apiece in the victory and Rachel Cook and Desiree Ridder each chipped in 4. Maecy Cooper had 3 points and Sarah Scott scored 2.
On Nov. 12, the eighth-graders battled in two tough games against Clark Middle School but lost both times. Clark won the A team game, 28-22, and edged BLMS in the B team game, 19-18.
On Thursday, Nov. 13, the eighth-graders split a twin bill with Tonganoxie as the A team lost, 35-18, and the B team won, 13-10. Johnson scored 8 points for the A team in the defeat.
The B team used a balanced attack in its victory as Belk and Ridder scored 3 points apiece, Cooper, Sarah Scott and Brenna Shandy each had 2 and Stubbs scored 1.
BLMS was swept for the first time this season on Tuesday when it played Monticello Trails. The A team lost, 47-23, despite a 19-point eruption by Johnson. The B team also lost, 39-15, but received a game-high 7 points from Belk.
The BLMS seventh-graders also kept their strong season alive. The A team remained undefeated as it edged Pioneer Ridge, 31-30. Victoria Smith led the way with 10 points, Amber Garver had 8 and Courtney Payne had 6.
The B team lost to Pioneer Ridge, 22-9. Ally Laney scored a team-high 5 points.
In its series with Clark, BLMS won both A and B games. Smith, Garver and Kayleigh Schoenfelder scored 8 points apiece to lead the A team to a 42-7 victory. Laney had a season-high 12 points in the B team’s 20-17 victory.
The seventh-grade A team rolled to 7-0 for the season on Tuesday when it survived an overtime challenge from Monticello Trails, 28-27. Courtney Payne poured in a team-high 14 points and Smith added 10 in the victory.
The B team also won, 21-16 as five different players scored.
