Churches prepare annual turkey dinner

November 20, 2008

Turkeys are flying off the shelves of local stores as Thanksgiving Day nears.

Five of those turkeys will be headed toward the 15th annual Bonner Springs Community Thanksgiving Dinner, which will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, at the First Christian Church, 148 N. Nettleton Ave.

“We have a wonderful time serving our community,” said organizer LeAnne DeTar Newbert about the volunteers who help. “We just hope we have a lot of people.”

Preparing the five turkeys just as she has done for the last 10 years will be Bonner Springs resident Dorothy Klamm.

Shawnee’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church will provide pies for the dinner, and the “famous cornbread dressing” will be provided once again by Olivet Church of God in Christ. Other area individuals will fill out the dishes for the rest of the meal.

DeTar Newbert said the dinner usually gets about 40 people, whose reasons for being there are all different.

DeTar Newbert said there are guests who don’t have family in town to celebrate the holiday with, others who don’t have the funds to create a meal of their own and others who just don’t have the desire to cook themselves and want to enjoy a group atmosphere.

For those that are homebound or prefer to have their dinner in their residence, a take-out service will be provided. DeTar Newbert said a reservation for that service is appreciated so volunteers can estimate how much to cook.
