Bonner Springs resident Robert Isabell clinched the championship of the Dash Series at I-70 Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 20.

Going into the race, Isabell was only 14 points ahead of second-place driver Michael Deschenes. Both drivers won their heats, leaving the point standings unchanged heading into the evening feature race. Isabell’s car ended up tangled with a bent wheel in the feature race, but his brother — Jason Isabell — held off Deschenes to win the feature race and help Robert Isabell collect the season points title.

Driving the dark blue Mustang No. 75 car, Isabell has constant success throughout the season. Out of 12 starts this year, he notched five top-five finishes, 12 top-10s, nine heat victories and two feature wins. Isabell raced every Saturday night with the exception of one night with a blown motor. His brother, Jason Isabell — the 2004 champion at I-70 Speedway —relented for the night so Robert Isabell could keep up in the points race.

Robert Isabell has been around racing all his life with his dad racing at the old Lakeside Speedway in the early 1970s. He started racing in 1992 and was Rookie of the Year at Lakeside when it was still an asphalt track. He bought his first race car from J.R. Nolting which helped sponsor him for many years. Helping out in the pits are his brother and parents and Melvin’s Machine Shop.
