Tennis regionals loom for Bonner
October 8, 2008
With the Class 5A regional tournament and — possibly — a trip to state right round the corner, the Bonner Springs girls tennis team got a final tune-up on Thursday, Oct. 2, when it played host to its round-robin home tournament.
The competition was stiff in the eight-team field, especially with teams like Class 6A power Olathe East in attendance.
Olathe East won the meet with 18 points, followed closely by Gardner-Edgerton and De Soto with 17 apiece. BSHS tied for sixth.
It was exactly the type of challenge BSHS coach Bill Scott wanted his team to face before heading into postseason play.
Even though overall records weren’t glossy, Scott said he saw plenty of improvement in his players.
Bonner’s No. 1 singles player, Samantha Haas, went 0-3 on the day against tough competition. Scott said Haas played hard all day and that the No. 1 slot is the hardest position in most tournaments.
At No. 2 singles, Breanna Tendick fared a little better by going 3-2 on the day and placing third overall.
“She is a freshman and she earned a Bonner Arrowhead medal. Not many freshmen have ever done that,” Scott said. “Breanna is going to be a good future player for Bonner if she works at it.”
The No. 1 doubles team of Meghan Miller and Renee Drury was 1-2 on the day. Their best match came against Olathe East where they lost in a heartbreaking tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-4).
“They win that tiebreaker and they medal,” Scott said. “They are both seniors, and this was their last shot at one of those coveted Bonner Arrowheads. They both played about as good as they can play all day.”
The No. 2 doubles team of Teran Holter and Emily Randolph placed second in the tournament. They posted a 3-2 record for the day and notched a big victory against Olathe East. Both losses were to tournament champion Gardner-Edgerton.
Scott said he was thrilled with the way Holter and Randolph performed.
“Teran and Emily have played well together all year, so this result didn’t surprise me,” Scott said. “Teran is aggressive at the net and Emily is good at setting her up.”
However, the second Gardner match put the duo at risk of continuing its success because Randolph suffered a shoulder injury that may end her tennis season.
BSHS was scheduled to play a dual Monday at Mill Valley, but it was rained out. The Bravettes next play at 8 a.m. today at regionals at Gardner-Edgerton High School.

With college football season around the corner, what teams are you most excited to watch?
“I am really not a sports fan at all. But my husband will watch any team, college or pro. He loves football.”
