Trail too much for BSHS

October 8, 2008

The Bonner Springs volleyball team fought hard Tuesday night before falling at home to an athletic squad from Santa Fe Trail.

Santa Fe Trail controlled the match from the beginning with crisp passing, sharp serving and great spikes that stymied the Bravettes. Anytime BSHS began a run, SFT had an answer and took control of the swing in momentum.

“We were inconsistent tonight. There were a lot of swings back and forth,” BSHS coach Kerri Jennings said. “They seemed to take control of the momentum more often than we were able too.”

Santa Fe Trail’s Hayley Spicer seemed to control the middle of the court for the Chargers, knowing when to drop a touch shot over the Bravettes’ defenders waiting to block a spike attempt at the net. Spicer’s play was complemented by senior Jessi Whitaker’s dominating service game. She drilled serve after serve from the left edge of the back line. The ball curled into play and caused Bonner to scramble at times just to try to return it.

Bonner’s Emily Herre had some big kills of her own, and Chelsea Crawford served well at times, but in the end it was not enough as the Bravettes ran out of gas.

“I think we need to keep working on everything in practice,” Crawford said. “We try to go hard all game. If we are down 24-0, don’t give up. We can come back, it has happened before. Never give up — we talk about that every day in practice.”

Jennings is hopeful the girls will continue to work hard leading up to the remaining matches on the schedule.

“We made mental errors at times — like missing serves,” Jennings said. “We can’t do that if we want to be successful.”

Jennings also said her team has improved from the beginning of the year and hopes to win a couple of matches on Saturday at the Wyandotte County Tournament.
