Comeback kids: Bonner Springs wipes out 3-goal deficit in victory
Jones tallies hat trick in 6 minutes as Braves defeat SM North, 4-3
September 11, 2008
The Bonner Springs Braves soccer team improved to 3-1 with a stirring come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Class 6A foe Shawnee Mission North on Tuesday night at David Jaynes Stadium.
The Braves trailed for more than 50 minutes of the game before getting hot and taking control, holding off the talented Indians down the stretch.
"I told them that we needed to hustle and stop forcing the action," Braves coach Mike Moulin said. "I also said to do what we do in practice, which is taking the ball outside and cross it in front of the goal. We did that on three of our four goals."
The Indians took the lead eight minutes into the first half when Brad Remy got past the Bonner defenders and slammed a kick home past charging goalkeeper Ethan Isaacs. On the possession, North had one player running uncovered and as they passed it, Remy was the one who became open and took full advantage.
With 5.5 seconds remaining in the first half, North struck again. This time it appeared they might have been offsides, getting behind the Braves' defenders and kicked in the goal for the 2-0 lead. The partisan Bonner Springs crowd hollered that the referees missed the call, but the goal was allowed to stand sending the North team into halftime with a commanding two-goal lead.
North stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 47th minute when midfielder Evan Paschal kicked a deflection backwards past Isaacs. The Indians seemed to have total control of the game and would have to just play out the string to gather the victory.
However, in the next 10 minutes BSHS seized control of the game in stunning fashion by scoring four unanswered goals to shock the Indians.
Bonner scored for the first time of the night when senior midfielder Garret Parker lifted a perfect pass to a waiting freshman forward Shawn Jones. Jones cocked his head to the left and delivered a header by North goalkeeper Sam Mahr to make the score 3-1 with 30 minutes to go. It was the first leg of Jones' hat trick - a hat trick that would take him all of six minutes to score.
The Braves made the score 3-2 on a great pass from forward Jose Lopez to Alex Soto who drilled the goal. Then, one minute later Jones scored his second goal and tied the game at three. Exactly one minute later Soto found Jones in front of the Indians' goal, completing the hat trick. The goal gave the Braves a 4-3 lead, a lead that they would not relinquish.
"I scored a hat trick in thirty seconds in indoor one time, but never on varsity outside like that," Jones said. "We were down and my adrenaline was pumping and (the ball) started going in for me. My teammates were getting the ball to me when I was open and I was just able to clean up."
"I was really proud of our team tonight. The way they came out after getting behind made me very happy," Moulin said. "In the first half we had some mental breakdowns, but I told them to make better decisions in the second half."
Bonner visits Blue Valley at 6 p.m. Thursday at Blue Valley West's campus. The junior varsity fell to SMN 3-1 before the varsity game.
