Thunderstorms temporarily delay football games

September 17, 2008

It's just two weeks into the high school football season, and already history appears to be trying to repeat itself in the Kaw Valley League.

Bonner Springs and Lansing - two of the league's tri-champions in 2007 - sit atop the league standings with 2-0 records. Fellow tri-champ Perry-Lecompton and traditional league power Mill Valley played their first league games of the season last week and earned victories as well.

Everybody in the KVL has played at least one league contest now except for Tonganoxie. The Chieftains, a former league power trying to bounce back from last season's 1-8 campaign, already have surpassed their 2007 wins total by starting 2-0.

Perhaps the biggest surprises so far in the young season are not the teams near the top of the standings, rather it's the teams at the bottom. League newcomer Turner is known as a solid football school in Class 5A, but the Bears are 0-2 so far this year and 0-1 in the league. Meanwhile, Piper and Bishop Ward both sit at 0-2.

The biggest game in the league this week will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at Lansing when Bonner Springs visits Frank Graham Field for a battle of league heavyweights. Another game to watch will be a rising Mill Valley squad that travels to Basehor-Linwood in a test that will be critical to both teams as they try to stay in the hunt for a league crown. In addition, Tonganoxie finally plays its first league contest on Friday night when it travels to Perry-Lecompton for another game that could loom large on the league standings.
