Herre leads BSHS swimmers with fast race
April 9, 2009
The Bonner Springs swimming team dipped its toes in the pool for the first time this spring on Thursday, April 2, in Topeka for the Topeka High School Invitational.
The Bravettes tied for ninth place with only 10 swimmers.
Emily Herre picked up where she left off at the end of last season with a solid all-around day. She finished second in the 200-yard individual medley and third in the 100 freestyle.
At the Blue Valley Invitational on Tuesday the Bravettes did not get an overall team score or place finish, but had some great swims overall. Herre earned a state consideration time in the 100 breastroke.
Coach Tierney Thompson said all the girls had great performances to start their season off and is looking forward to a solid season overall.
There are four leaders (Monica Sorensen, Kaley Withers, Herre and Aubree Miller) who attended a leadership retreat last May with Thompson and have brought about changes to the program.
Overall, eight swimmers return (Herre, Teran Holter, Lyndie Kill, Jaclyn Lira, Miller, Laura Rink, Sorensen and Withers) along with four new swimmers (Chandler Clark, Jordan Merino, Toni Stock and Megan Scott).
Clark and Scott will see limited action due to injuries.
“(I am) very excited about the start of this season,” Thompson said. “With so many returning swimmers, the groundwork of my expectations and how I coach have already been laid last year so we’ve been able to get into the season with more intensity and have been able to get more specific with stroke technique. The girls are worn out and tired this week after two meets and a goal set on Wednesday, but they are thrilled with how their season has started, as am I.”
The Bravettes have three home meets in a row coming up: April 9, 15 and 21.
