Editors note: This begins a series in which The Chieftain will introduce the community to members of the Bonner Springs High School Class of 2009. Throughout the series, we will profile some of the BSHS seniors about what they learned and what they hope the future holds for them.

Stephen Call hurt his knee while playing basketball in fifth grade.

In eighth grade, the now senior at Bonner Springs High School, had surgery on his knee because it was discovered that pieces of the bone had broken off and were loose in the knee socket. After the surgery, Call went through several physical therapy sessions, and in addition to giving him back his jump shot, Call discovered his future.

“(After graduation) I’m going to Kansas City, Kan., Community College to become a physical therapy assistant,” Call said of his future career path. “When I had my knee surgery and went through physical therapy, I learned a lot. I like learning about bones, and I like exercise, so it makes sense.”

The physical therapy assistant program at KCKCC is a two-year program, Call said. Once he completes his studies, he said he hoped to find a job in the field.

But before getting too far ahead of himself, Call is looking forward to college life. While he hasn’t decided if he’ll live at home while attending the Kansas City, Kan., school or if he’ll find a roommate, Call said he was excited about the freedom coming his way after his high school graduation.

“In high school, you’re here eight hours a day all the time,” Call said. “But in college, you don’t have to be in class all day long.”

Call also plans to try out for the baseball team at KCKCC. He currently plays baseball at BSHS and hopes to continue staying active.

Although Call said he was eager to start his next step in life, he can’t help but look back at his time in high school, which consisted of fond memories of friends and sports.

“I think I’ll miss most just hanging out with my friends,” he said. “It’ll be crazy not seeing everyone as much, as everyone goes their own separate ways.”
