Tonganoxie sweeps BSHS softball

April 29, 2009

— The Chieftains didn’t look like a winless team on Thursday when Bonner Springs came to visit, and by the end of the evening, that adjective no longer fit.

With a twinbill sweep of the Braves, the Tonganoxie High softball team is off the schneid.

THS won convincingly, 11-0, for its first victory of the season and followed that up with a 3-2 squeaker.

“We all just played as a team and our focus was more on the game,” said THS sophomore pitcher Tiffany Jacobs. “We were ready to play and ready for a win.”

Ready indeed. The Chieftains scored four in the first inning and three in the second on the way to a five-inning, mercy-rule victory.

Bonner Springs struggled to build any momentum as the Bravettes recorded just two hits. Jacobs allowed no walks, either.

BSHS proved to be much tougher in the second go-round.

Bonner Springs scored two early runs and carried the 2-0 advantage into the bottom of the sixth. That’s when Tonganoxie scored three runs and took command.

Still, the Bravettes didn’t go quietly. They loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh, but a double play ended the game.
