Christmas trees to benefit North Park Lake fish

December 24, 2009

The Bonner Springs Parks and Recreation department, in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, is accepting whole, live Christmas trees to be recycled and used as habitat for fish in the Bonner Springs North Park Lake.

The Christmas trees will be used for fish beds on the bottom of the lake. Adding and replacing habitat for fish helps maintain fish health, growth and populations, which then benefits other lake inhabitants.

Area fishermen can also reap the rewards of more plentiful fish later in the spring or summer.

A drop-off site for scotch pine, cedar or douglas fir trees is in the fenced area in the parking lot of North Park Lake, 1200 S. 134th St. Starting at the entrance of the lake, you can follow the signs to the fenced area.

Please remove tinsel, lights, ornaments and trees bags. The parks and recreation department will not accept trees with paint or fake snow.

The parks and recreation department is also looking for volunteers to assist with this project. For more information or to volunteer, contact the parks and recreation department at (913) 422-7010.
