5 Questions: Forever young
Owner sells, repairs, even builds Go Karts
Kart Mart owner Scott Holmes sits in one of the Go Karts he is repairing. Holmes says he has been interested in the sport since he was a kid and considers himself to be an expert in all things related to the building, repairing and, especially, riding of Go Karts. He has owned and operated Kart Mart, at 400 E. Front St., for almost 10 years.

Q. What do you specialize in at Kart Mart?
A. We build (Go Karts), we fix ‘em, we sell ‘em. Parts is the main thing. We sell parts all over the country. We ship out a lot more parts than we do here locally. We ship parts to Hawaii, Alaska. Two weeks ago we had three different orders from the North Pole, all in one day.
Q. What kind of parts do you sell and how many do you sell in a year?
A. Tires, wheels, intake gaskets, coils. Any and every part on a Go Kart, we usually have it in stock. I have no idea (how many parts we sell). It’s all seasonal. During July we do a whole lot more than we do in October.
Q. What do you like about building Go Karts?
A. It’s fun. It kind of makes you where you’d never grow up. Keeps the kid in ya. I’ve always been working on ‘em. I just never outgrew ‘em.
Q. How many would you say you sell in a year?
A. Probably 10 or 12. Three years ago, we sold about 15 ATV Karts (Go Karts that have a motor similar to a 4-wheeler) a week. Once the market gets flooded with it, sales kind of go down.
Q. Why do you think Bonner Springs is a good place to run a Go Kart business?
A. Bonner’s not too bad because a lot of people here have land. They have 10 or 15 acres for their kids to ride ‘em. Every kid wants a Go Kart.
