Bravettes beat SFT, fall to MVHS

February 26, 2009

The Bonner Springs Bravettes upended Santa Fe Trail on Tuesday night, 45-37, continuing a surge up the Kaw Valley League basketball standings from ninth to sixth in recent weeks.

Despite a slow start, the Bravettes outscored the Chargers by 13 points in the second and third quarters.

The Bravettes turned the ball over six times in the first quarter and scored only 4 points. The rest of the game they only turned the ball over five times, allowing them numerous additional scoring opportunities that they capitalized on.

On defense they were able to force turnovers and turn them into good looks on the offensive side for easy buckets in transition.

Erica Smith led BSHS with 11 points and Erica Wilson added 10. Erin Marx had 9 points and six rebounds.

It marked the latest in a string of solid performances for Bonner Springs, including a loss Friday to Mill Valley.

The Bravettes (4-15 overall, 4-8 KVL) close out the regular season at 6 p.m. Friday at Basehor-Linwood (14-5, 9-3).

“I’m excited to see what’s going to happen Friday (against Basehor),” BSHS coach Clay Oakes said. “We are playing better basketball then the last time that we played them, so I think the game will be interesting.”

Oakes said the biggest reason that his team is playing better at this point in the season is because of the improvement of his freshman class.

“When the season started, the speed of the game was affecting (the freshmen),” Oakes said. “Now everything is slowing down for them, and that has been a big key to our play.”

The last time Basehor and Bonner played, the Bobcats sent the Bravettes away with a 17-point loss.

MILL VALLEY 52, BSHS 45

The BSHS girls were unable to send their two seniors out with a victory in their final home game Friday night, but the Bravettes definitely gave them a Senior Night to remember.

BSHS led for most of the game before and nearly had Mill Valley down for the count before the Jaguars mustered a furious rally to win, 52-45.

Senior Starian Porchia knocked down a jumper off an assist from fellow senior Anna Hutchison to give BSHS a 10-9 lead early in the second quarter. Mill Valley responded and built a 15-12 lead, but the Bravettes answered with a 3-pointer from freshman Yessenia Hernandez. The Bravettes continued to build momentum. Hernandez buried a trey at the buzzer to send BSHS into the locker room with a 24-19 advantage.

Mill Valley battled back and tied the game at 32-32 by the end of the third quarter.

Ostman opened the fourth quarter with another 3-pointer. Two possessions later, sophomore Erica Smith sank a trey that put BSHS on top 38-33. Mill Valley responded with four free throws, but a pair of free throws and a jumper by Ostman pressed the Bravettes lead to 42-37 with 2:54 left to go on the clock.

The Jaguars outscored the Bravettes 15-3 down the stretch.
