BSHS having fun, still not satisfied

January 8, 2009

The Bonner Springs Braves are chomping at the bit to get back on the hardwood at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they travel to Mill Valley.

Although excited to play, the game starts a stretch that has the Braves facing five of the top teams in the Kaw Valley League in the next three weeks.

The Braves are 2-3, with two losses coming to Lansing and one coming to juggernaut Bishop Miege. The road doesn’t get much easier in the coming weeks, but coach Ryan Hull and his team have a positive outlook.

“For a team that didn’t have any expectations on paper, we aren’t satisfied,” Hull said. “We are still pushing to get better every day. Our guys recognize that the next couple of weeks will be a huge test, and we just can’t be satisfied with how we have performed up to this point.”

The Braves have some work to do on shoring up their defense where they have had several mental lapses leading to easy buckets by their opponents. The system they run has the players go all out for about 90 seconds, and then they are replaced by another five players. Hull is looking for the players to sustain the intensity they are playing with, but with fewer mistakes.

The Braves have not changed their outlook on the season. They have said they are going to learn every day and continue to fight hard. The bottom line about BSHS is they are under-sized, inexperienced and not as skilled as many other teams, but they expect to outwork their opponents and compete to the final buzzer. Their plan, Hull said, is for that to equate to more victories.

“This has been so much fun already,” Hull said. “We have one guy averaging double digits, but everyone on our team can score. That is what high school sports is all about — fun.”
