January 8, 2009
As Martin Luther King, Jr. Day nears, events are being planned across the area, including in Kansas City, Kan., and Bonner Springs.
The 24th Annual Kansas City, Kan., Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the Jack Reardon Civic Center, 500 Minnesota, Kansas City, Kan.
With a theme of “Proving the dream as we embrace change — while continuing towards peace, love and brotherhood,” the Rev. C.L. “Clem” Bachus, pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Kansas City, Kan., will be the keynote speaker. In addition to a speech from Bachus, a combined choir will perform.
Prior to the celebration at the civic center, the event will kick off at 10 a.m. from Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 417 Richmond Ave., Kansas City, Kan., with a motorcade for hunger. The motorcade will make its way to the civic center while collecting canned goods to donate to local food pantries.
In Bonner Springs, the 21st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the First Christian Church, 148 N. Nettleton Ave. The theme will be “The Dream Reborn,” and topics will include the ways in which community members are addressing the threats to the environment. It is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided.
The keynote speaker will be Richard Mabion, a community activist from Kansas City, Kan., who is addressing the issues in the inner city. There will also be presentations on what USD 204 students are studying and doing for the community, as well as a music program.
Organizers are selling buttons to help fund the event. The buttons are green and display the logo “The Dream Reborn.”
There will be no school Monday, Jan. 19, for the students of USD 204 in celebration of the day, as well.
