Victory sparks lineup change for Bravettes

January 8, 2009

The last time we heard about the Bonner Springs Bravettes basketball team, they were headed into holiday break coming off their first win, a 58-30 thrashing of Turner.

They took their 1-4 record into the break needing to improve in several areas on the court, but the victory over Turner may have provided a glimpse of what is to come the rest of the season.

In that game junior Lynsey Ostman started at point guard for the first time this season. She knocked in 10 points, kept the team calm, did not turn the ball over and made good decisions with her passes. She stepped in for freshman Yessenia Hernandez, who was out of town and missed the game.

Coach Clay Oakes said Ostman will continue to start at point guard, but Hernandez will remain an important part of the team with her exceptional speed and solid defensive play. As far as the rest of the team goes, it remains to be seen what they can be.

“We aren’t where we should be after break because a lot of the girls were sick or on vacation, so they didn’t get a lot of time to spend on the court together,” Oakes said. “Our goals still have not changed, though. We expect to finish in the top half of the league.”

Oakes sees two keys for his team to get better: improved shooting by his guards and more physical play from his post players.

“If we play hard and do things the right way, I think we will be all right,” Oakes said. “If our shots start to fall, we should be able to put some wins together in the upcoming weeks.”

BSHS kicks off 2009 with a 6 p.m. Friday game at Mill Valley. The Jaguars (0-5) have not played a league game yet, and four of their first five games have been against Class 6A schools.
