Bonner Springs swimmers look to get healthy, improve
January 15, 2009
This time of year you always hear the same thing about people being sick: “Oh, it’s really going around right now.”
With the Bonner Springs boys swim team, that is exactly what is happening right now.
The team spent much of winter break fighting off illness, and in some cases many of the swimmers still are sick.
“It’s difficult to get into the pool when you are sick,” coach Lynn LaNoue said. “The guys just have to wait for their doctors to clear them to swim. We have just been racked with illness, and in swimming, one guy being sick can throw off all of your relay teams — everything.”
On Thursday, Jan. 8, BSHS traveled to Turner High School for a meet. It was the Braves’ first competition in three weeks. They finished third out of six teams.
“I had hoped that we would do a little better than we did,” LaNoue said. “Just trying to get the team to re-settle after the break is a challenge sometimes.”
The Braves will travel to Lawrence Free State today. They expect to see a fast pool considering Free State has one of the state’s nicest indoor swimming facilities. LaNoue said that the focus will be on the relay teams this week, with each swimmer competing in three relay races and only one individual event.
“My goal is to swim as many as I possibly can, even with our large numbers,” LaNoue said.
This week LaNoue hopes that the team will start to settle in and continue to work hard. The Braves are preparing for a big push in the second half of the season. They have only three more meets before playing host to the Wyandotte County championships at the end of January.
