Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Stephen L. Cook was part of a 29th Infantry Division task force that participated in training near Tokyo with the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force.
The training was part of an annual bilateral exercise between American and Japanese forces called Yama Sakura 55. The task force, comprised of Virginia and Maryland National Guard members, is responsible for a division of simulated soldiers in a computer-generated command post exercise that simulates an attack on Japan.
Cook, the son of Jane M. Schubert of Bonner Springs, is a topographic analyst of the Headquarters, 29th Infantry Division in Laurel, Md.
