Series to offer veggie garden tips

The Wyandotte County Extension Office will offer a series on “Starting a Vegetable Garden” this year.
There will be five sessions in the series that will be conducted from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Sunflower Room at the Wyandotte County Extension office at 1216 N. 79th St.
The first session is “Getting the Dirt on Soils and Choosing Tasty Vegetables” on Feb. 5. Lynn Loughary, horticulture agent, and Grace Troeh, Wyandotte County Extension master gardener, will cover soil preparation for gardens, including testing PH and fertilizing.
The second session is “Jump Starting your Vegetable Garden with Season Extending Techniques” given by Ted Carey of KSU on March 5. Carey will cover vegetable season extension techniques such as backyard hoop houses and row covers.
The third session is “Down and Dirty: Planting those Vegetables” on April 2. General planting techniques, raised beds, containers and trellising will be covered by Beverly Hunt and Elizabeth Duke, Wyandotte County Extension master gardeners.
The fourth session is “Harvesting and Using your Bountiful Vegetable Crops” on Sept. 3. Grace Troeh and Sara Niemann, Wyandotte County Extension master gardeners, will cover when to harvest and how to use the vegetables you grew.
The final session is “Converting Lawn and Garden Debris into Black Gold” on Oct. 1. This class will be about vegetable garden cleanup, composting and putting your garden to bed. Lynn Loughary, horticulture agent, and Don Crim, Wyandotte County Extension master gardener, will present.
