BSHS fills coaching vacancies

July 2, 2009

The winds of change have blown across the playing fields at Bonner Springs High School, as it does almost every year in high school coaching.

Rick Moulin is out as baseball coach after extending his coaching career one extra year to close it out with this year’s senior class. He will be replaced by Barry Richards. Richards was the junior varsity coach and was in the dugout all spring. He also is an assistant coach for the BSHS boys basketball team. He graduated from Penn State University in 1983 where he played baseball for four seasons. Next year will be Richard’s 12th season coaching baseball.

Golf coach Jacob Beck accepted a job to coach wrestling at the college level and will be replaced by head boys basketball coach Ryan Hull.

On the girls’ side, interviews currently are being conducted to fill the volleyball vacancy, and the softball coaching job has been locked up by Kara Wardlow-Reed after she stepped in mid-season to replace Roger Davidson. Wardlow operated under the interim tag this season when Davidson left for personal reasons, but now she is eager to put her stamp on the program.

“My hopes and goals for the softball team are extremely high,” Wardlow said. “I am a very competitive person and I want to turn the program into a very competitive program. I want the softball team to become a dominant force in the Kaw Valley League. I want to become the top team in the league. I want to compete in state play.”

Wardlow is familiar with the KVL, having played high school ball at Basehor-Linwood. She learned at an early age how important year-round play was to developing a softball program, so she is encouraging her players to do just that.

“I want more of the girls to compete in competitive summer softball,” she said. “The more the girls are exposed to elite play, the better of a program we can build. I have many wants for this program. They are all something we can obtain with hard work and dedication. Never settle for less than the best.”
